Last month I wrote a post called don’t focus on the goal focus on the habits that get you there and today I want to talk about goals.
Because I’ve seen a few different people talk about how they don’t set goals they set up systems instead. Which I completely agree is the best way to get going and actually make solid progress, but if you don’t have a goal you’re working towards how can you measure if your system is working?
My running for example, I’m trying to create a habit of running 3 times a week, with the aim of running a half marathon next year. If I didn’t have the goal of running a half marathon to build up to then there’s every chance each week I’d go for 3 small easy runs and would quickly stop improving, I’d still get some benefit but nothing compared to knowing I have to push to get somewhere.
The goal helps decide what your systems and habits need to achieve and guide you from there, so still start small and lock in the habits but know where that habit is going to take you.
